Cuban Diva Omara Portuondo Asks US Government to End Blockade of Cuba

Guantánamo, Nov 6 (CMKS).- Cuban diva Omara Portuondo, who just Latin Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary Tropical Album, said on Thursday that it would be better for everyone if the US Government lifted its economic blockade of the Caribbean nation.

  Omara made the statement at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, which hosted the 10th Latin Grammy Awards on Thursday night.

  The Cuban diva, who came to renewed international attention with the Buena Vista Social
Club, won the award with her recording ‘Gracias’ (Thank You), which honored her 60 years in music. She made history by not only being the first Cuban artist from the island to appear on the telecast, but the first to win an award on the air.

Omara thanked all the musicians who participated in the production of the album,
especially Uruguayan Jorge Drexler.

  The album, recorded in late 2008 in Cuba, includes collaborations by Cuban singers Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes and Brazilian Chico Buarque.

  Cuban renowned pianist Chucho Valdes also won a Grammy on Thursday in the category of Best Tropical Jazz Album, shared with his father Bebo Valdes with the CD Juntos para siempre (Together Forever).
