
Guantanamo Railway Station nominated to the Restoration National Award

Guantánamo, April 13 .- By the excellent care and respect of the architectural elements the Guantanamo Railway Station is one of the buildings nominated to the Restoration and Conservation National Award, a recognition given each year by the Council of Cultural Heritage in Cuba.
Created in 1931 by the Guantánamo Ralood Western Company, the existing railway station in this province is part of the style art – deco style, makes a nice and symmetrical set of volumes that is sighted in different heights.
The facades are framed by bands or outgoing surfaces that accentuate the verticality of the building and establish an attractive set of incomings and outgoings, proper of the architectural style. Along with the building design converge lamps, metalwork and banks, which follow the same decorative line.
According to Gaspar Atares, Director of the Office of Monuments and Historic Sites, the railway construction in Guantanamo is attributed to the architect Rafael Geno and during the current restoration process it was respected the aesthetic line, color and distinctive style.
Together with the Guantanamo Railway Station compete for the award in the category of restoration about 11 buildings, including Christ Church of the Good Journey in Camagüey declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site and Cespedes Park in Santiago de Cuba.
The National Award for Restoration and Conservation, created in the year 2003 to recognize the efforts for the preservation of our architectural heritage will be given next April 17, to honor the International Day of heritage and historical sites.Translation by Ilia Charon @
