
The elderly enjoy their rights
Guantánamo, Dec. 10 .- The Program for the Elderly benefits more than eight thousand 700 persons in the province, where priority is given to medical and social assistance towards increasing life expectancy in this population segment.
This attention is carried out in Elderly homes and other institutions existing in communities, in addition to the specialized care received in polyclinics and hospitals in the territory through geriatricians.
So they are prioritized preventive campaigns of hypertension, diabetes and other diseases, whose risks grow with age, besides promoting healthier lifestyles with proper diet and physical exercises.
The 120 Years Club enables men and women over 60 years raise their self-esteem and role in society, at the same they receive care in more than a dozen rehabilitation facilities built in recent years as part of the changes experienced by the health system nationwide.
Over 7 years ago, Cuba began the University for the Elderly and Guantánamo is showing its experience. The program has a positive impact and great reception among elderly people as they learn to care for their own health, build better relationships and help keep family harmony, often affected by generational differences and resulting conflicts.
Voluntary tutors teach lessons of various subjects of Psychology, Dentistry, Human Development, Policy and related elders´ personal and social perspectives for their physical and spiritual health.
The existence of about 70 old people living beyond the century in Guantánamo is an example of the attention received by this population segment in the east of the island, a province with more than 75 percent of its surface covered by mountains and joined to the efforts of the Cuban State to raise life expectancy which today is around 77.
