Ibero-American Summit condemns terrorism against Cuba
Havana, Dec. 2 (ACN) The 19th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government demanded today in the Portuguese territory of Estoril the prosecution of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, a promoter of bombings and violent actions against Cuba.The leaders of 22 countries rejected the fact that Posada Carriles, responsible for the bombing of a Cuban airliner in 1976 that killed 73 innocent civilians enjoys impunity.
After three days of deliberations, the Latin American community supported the efforts to achieve the criminal's extradition requested by Venezuela to the United States, reported Prensa Latina.
The forum reaffirmed the value of extradition as an essential tool in the fight against terrorism, and urged those states that received such requests from Latin American nations to proceed to duly consider them, with full adherence to the applicable legal framework.
Dignitaries from 19 Latin American countries plus Spain, Portugal and Andorra, urged United States to consider the possibility of being part, urgently, of all conventions and protocols related to this global situation.
In addition to sign international agreements that compel them to provide legal assistance, prosecute and punish promptly and appropriately, to those who finance, sponsor, participate and commit terrorist acts, always adhering to international law.
We will continue to work to adopt the necessary and consistent measures with our respective obligations under international law to prohibit by law incitement to commit terrorist acts and prevent such behaviors.
The Estoril Summit´s special communiqué on terrorism confirms the need to avoid impunity for those who commit such acts, and calls the world to collaborate in this endeavor; especially the countries on whose territory or against its citizens are committed violent actions.
